We are pleased to announce we have acquired exclusive rights to produce weapon and armor prop replicas from the HBO® series Game of Thrones®. We will begin manufacturing these items while continuing to work on the “A Song of Ice and Fire” book replicas we already produce. We are very excited about the ability to pull from the designs the prop designers on the show have come up with. We have already started work on the Bran Assassination Dagger, the Hound’s Helm, a Stark Infantry Shield, and Robb Stark’s Sword, which we hope to have out by the end of the year. Many are likely wondering if we plan on producing show versions of the book swords we have already done, the answer to that is yes, we intend on eventually doing that.
Amazing news! Congratulations.
I can’t wait! At this rate, I’m going to dedicate a whole room in my house to ASOIAF!
Will you be making any limited Damascus versions from the show?
Will you be making the show’s version if Ice?
Would also love to see Blackfyre and/ or Dark Sister.
I would love to buy a Maester’s chain, if that is not too small an item for your production.
A Maester’s chain may not be considered armor, which is what our license allows. We will be making Ice eventually. We cannot make items under the show license that are not from the show (Blackfyre/Dark Sister). We could make those under the book license, but do not want to as they have not received any significant “page time.” @Grant yes, but not everything.
@Valyrian, I would really like to see Gendry’s Bull Helm in addition to The Oathkeeper everyones drooling of. How about the Red Viper’s spear?
Will Jaime Lannister’s sword and Robert Baratheon’s sword be coming out? Those are two really awesome swords in the show.
Definitely looking forward to seeing a show version of Longclaw! And of course the House shields!
How close to the show’s weapons will your versions be?
Will it be exact in terms of length, width, thickness, etc?
From what I remember, Ice on the show is MASSIVE, longer even than the current Damascus version being sold.
Dennis
Pretty exact, but it isn’t that much bigger than the one currently being sold. Having held both side by side now, its like 2 or 3 inches.
Thanks for reply.
I have to say that I like your design for Ice better. Maybe it’s the limitations of shooting for a T.V. series but the Ice on the show has a very common run of the mill appearance. Looks basically just like a big sword, nothing more.
Maybe that fits in better with the utilitarian, no frills personality of the Starks or HBO’s vision of “reality behind fantasy” but your design from the book just seems more in line with “high fantasy” especially with the look of the pommel.
OMG I WAS JUST ABOUT TO POST this about Arya Stark’s Needle. I was going tocoplain it looked nothing liek the one in the show, but I didn’t realize you based the appearance on the books. I might think of purchasing the HBO Needle
Will you guys be making the blades of Daario?
Wow…that is totally awesome Valyrian Steel! This opens up so many great possibilities. I can’t wait! I love the ideas of what you have planned, but why Robb’s sword? To me it just kind of seemed like an ordinary norman/arming sword. That being said, i’ll still probably buy it! Some suggestions would be: a Knight of the Vale shield, Gendy’s helm, and I don’t know how far you want to get into suits of armor, but a kingsguard, gold cloak, and Lannister guardsmen suits of armor would be awesome. Also an arakh, Khal Drogo’s knives, Visery’s cool falchion-ish sword, and Jaime Lannister’s sword and dagger, (you could ask Jory Cassel about the specifications, he got a good “look” at it). For next season, depending on how they look, you could do an entire Unsullied outfit: spear, shield, short sword, spiked helm, sandals, tunic.
Also, this might be just way too obscure but as i was re-watching the episode when the hill tribes attack Catelyn and Tyrion, at the end of the fight, Bronn walks towards Tyrion and he has a badass looking kukri in his belt which could be pretty cool.
One more thing, this is not relating to the show, but Victarion Greyjoy’s kraken helm and cloak from the books would be sweet.
Just another thought. Rhaegar’s ruby encrusted armor would be an amazing piece to display.
Daario’s “girls” are something we’re quite excited about for the future.
Is there any idea on when concepts of the “girls” will be in the works? I would love to be able to get a pair of my own in the future.
Also is there any idea when Bran’s assassination dagger will be announced for preorders?
We would like to do a show version of the “girls” so that entirely depends on when the Daario character is introduced.
On the assassination dagger, no.
Good news
In terms of the armour, will you be releasing any leather armour that many characters wear? And would these be display items, or possibly wearable versions, as I am involved in medieval re-enactment.
Love your work.
I would love to eddard Starks ice or Jayme lanister golden sword or lanister armour or kings guard. What about jora mornmiths sword or broms. Any chance of jofferys sword or an arark
What about scabbards for your existing swords
Jaime Lannister’s sword from the show!!!
I assume you won’t have to make an HBO version of Longclaw in that they used your version of the sword in the 1st season. By the By was that Longclaw the prototype sword you sold recently (the person who got it probably will want to tape that episode and flaunt that fact it was used in the show if that was the case) anyway this may be an obvious answer just double checking in case there is an HBO longclaw you will make that I am unaware of.
Sorry Brad, that isn’t the case. HBO used a sword similar to ours (seeing as how we both worked from the same source material) but it wasn’t the same sword. They had their own original design on it.
Are there any plans to make Jamie Lannister’s sword from the show or are you going to wait and see their design for oathkeeper(i thought the sword from the show looked similar to what I’d imagine oathkeeper would look like)
Will you be posting up pictures of some of the show props you’ll be making replicas of? I’d love to get a nice look at what you guys will be producing. I can’t wait to have two difference Ices hanging up!
Any plans on doing the crowns of the kings from season 2?
When are Oathkeeper photos going to be released? Do you have a price estimate on it yet?
Any chance of seeing “Dragonbinder” as a Valyrian Steel original or HBO replica?
What about Dawn?
“When are Oathkeeper photos going to be released? Do you have a price estimate on it yet?”…x2.
Do you think you might do a version of Longclaw when it belonged to House Mormont, before it burned?
I was wondering where in the books do you find references / pictures of these swords.
GRRM’s head Devin, we work closely with him to design the swords.
I’m really looking forward to seeing pics of Oathkeeper and the Hound’s Helm.
I’m really excited for the hounds helm, if it looks anything like the GoT tv series with functioning visor it will be epic! I realize that it is in production, but do you have any idea on pricing?
I have to say, I own a Valyrian Steel Ice and I love it, it has a place of honour in my collection…
But since I first read the books, there is one weapon from a Song of Ice and Fire that I want more than anything: Dawn, the sword of Ser Arthur Dayne, Sword of the Morning.
The most famous sword in Westeros, from the greatest swordsman mentioned in the books, who met such an unnecessarily tragic end.
It just speaks to me.
Is there any information about Oathbreaker? I have Long Claw and want to add to my collection
Oathkeeper and no, nothing to report.
The HBO arakhs are really cool. I would love one with a high carbon steel blade and maybe a resin handle.
how many ice damascus are there left?
120
When do you plan on unveiling some of the new hbo Designs? And from what i saw on the show the lenghts of swords usally are the same, but the blades do appear to be alot thicker than the Longclaw and Ice being produced for the books. Will the hbo versions be more expensive if they are in fact heavier and thicker?
I pre-ordered Robert’s war hammer, just curious if you have a ballpark estimate of when that is coming out. Also, any info or first looks at some other stuff coming our way soon? I saved the most important for last. I don’t know what kind of source material you could look at to design it, but I think that if you took a poll the most popular piece you could make would be Arthur Dayne’s sword Dawn. It would definitely be a best seller and would be the ultimate fan pleaser. Please make Dawn.
I would love you guys forever if you stuck to making Oathkeeper. I also think making the Hound’s Helm is a wicked idea.
shutup and take my money!
So you will be making the HBO version of Longclaw?!? I loved the wolf pommel from the show!
How many of Needle, Longclaw and Ice are still available?
1500, 830, 800
Wow im surprised theres still alot of needles left. Hmm maybe the production run for the swords should be 1,000 for each item moving forward. You figure youd sell them all out within 1 year or less and it’ll make the rest of the items coming out even bigger sellers since they tend to go fast.
Will the HBO reproductions be “battle ready”? I know that term is somewhat loathed, but basically asking if it can be swung around without fear that it’s going to break apart from the force. I have some wall hangers that would be really dangerous to swing, much less make contact with something.
I would love the Mountain’s Irish ring pommel styled greatsword. I also hope the blades are battle ready.
just give me an update on the new releases already and i’ll be happy. concept art, drawings or even just a written description of what is in the works would be greatly appreciated!
Bran Assassination Dagger:
Steel Type?
Full Tang?
Handle Material?
Sharpen-able?
Stark Infantry Shield:
Material?
Functional/wearable?
This isn’t finalized yet, but the dagger will be damascus, not full tang, come sharpened already, with a faux-dragon-bone (synthetic) grip, and 24k gold plated metal parts. Stark shield more up in the air, probably high carbon steel, very functional and wearable.
Sweet! Sounds pretty awesome! BTW any update on Robb’s sword and also the Oathkeeper? I think from what I was able to research in the archives here on this site is that Oathkeeper is to be only Damascus steel and colored as well (very cool). Keep up the amazing work!
I know everyone wants Dawn as do I but this is really hard to make right.
The thing looks like MILK GLASS but is a match for Valyrian steel.
It’s badass in the books but how is this going to look in real life?
I guess Valyrian can make it literally out of milkglass but that would mean an extraordinarily fragile display piece and the risk of breakage would be huge. Otherwise, not sure how you can make steel look like that . . .
If Dawn is made, milk glass or otherwise, we will buy it. It is known.
These replicas are all excellent, do you have any plans on selling any Dothraki weapons in the future (primarily the Arakh)?
Yes
Any price estimates on the dagger yet?
Over $200?
around 300, its small and just a dagger, but it is still damascus and 24k gold plated.
Since you guys deal with GRRM frequently I was wondering if he mentioned any progress on the 6th book. He has not updated his site for the book since the 5th came out.
We don’t get any special access to book progress. But I know he did read a chapter from the next book recently.
http://www.tor.com/blogs/2012/03/george-r-r-martin-reveals-new-winds-of-winter-chapter
Are you going to be posting pictures soon of the dagger or Oathkeeper?
Stark Infantry Shield and Hound’s Helm:
Price estimates?
helm probably be $300.
shield might be same, might be more, it isn’t as far along in the process yet.
Gave this site a shoutout in my column (at the end) NORTH OF THE WALL, an episode review/recap at Joblo.com (http://www.joblo.com/blu-rays-dvds/news/beyond-the-wall-this-week-on-game-of-thrones-episode-1-april-1-2012-02)
Check it out and lemme know what you think, and I suppose you’re the one to ask, was that a replica of Robert’s Warhammer in the beginning matches?
It looked a lot like it didn’t it? It is possible HBO’s prop designers were inspired by our hammer, but they weren’t provided one by us.
Will you guys be making any house banners? Like the ones UC made to go with the LOTR Gondor shield ? The stark round shield from the HBO series would be sweet, but 10X
better with a house banner !
Our license does not include banners, though I know exactly what you mean. There are some banners made by other manufacturers.
We do plan to do something cool with the shield though.
Trying not to spoil for people who have not read or watched the series???Lightbringer??? Does S****** really have it or if it is/was “Dawn” , “Oathkeeper” , “Ice” ,”Blackfyre”, the D****n h*** or ????? Strange that no one is asking for one of the most important swords (my opinion) in the story????Could it also be the first Valyrian sword forged??Just saying next time your with GRRM that would be a great discussion Lol.
Do you think that Oathkeeper will cost about the same amount as Damascus Longclaw?
Less, we hope.
timeframe for king of the north’s sword release? summer 2012? or winter 2012? (no pun intended).
This may have already been answered, but when you do an HBO replica of Longclaw, will it be damascus and full tang?
Any Chance you will be producing lannister swords and armour it looks so cool.
also any chance any of the wepons will be battle ready
Any possible, vague timetable on future products? Also, any pics of anything in the developmental stage? It’s been a while since we got any upcoming pics or any solid news.
Sorry we have nothing to share. We’re working on things. It isn’t like the book replicas where we’d have concept art to show, they’re existing props, you’ve all already seen them on TV. So there is nothing to show until a prototype is done and photographed, and that takes awhile.
Eventually though, there will be lots of information, since we’re doing so many products concurrently.
I would buy a TV show version of Needle
Is there any news about the new items?
longclaw for the win. any chance that you might make any banners of the major houses i cant describe how awesome that would be ive wanted a house stark banner for so long. please make one please
I would like to buy the HBO versions of Longclaw, Ice, Needle, etc…not really interested in book versions of anything. Maybe Bob’s Hammer.
Though I do think the book designs are great, honestly, maybe because they had less input from Mr. Martin, but the HBO swords can and are easily real swords. By this I mean, there are plenty of Lord of the Rings Sword designs floating around, but Peter at Weta took these designs and said, “Let us make these look like they came out of a museum.” The HBO Ice is much more of the sword of a stoic northern man and the needle (which my wife wants to buy so desperately) is more proportioned to a 12 year old.
With all that in mind, the only thing that would hold me back from purchasing many if not all of the HBO replicas would be functionality. Windlass Steelcrafts, Hanwei, and Darksword Armory all make fully functional high carbon steel and some Damascus swords anywhere from $200-$500. Hell, I got my functional Robin Hood Sword for $125.
In short, I WANT FUNCTIONAL! I love, and I mean love! Lord of the Rings. But I refuse to buy a licensed rat-tail tang stainless steel blade for more than $150. And I have never paid more than $150, including shipping for any of my 9 LOTR United Cutlery Swords.
I personally am willing to pay more for functional, but most people’s budget can’t soar into the range of the overpriced Albion lifestyle. As an avid reader of the books before the show, the show brought everything I read to the screen. I am excited for these products to be released, especially Needle for the wife’s sake. I sure just hope that they are functional…
You’ll like Robb’s sword then. But you know, there is nothing “unrealistic” about our book swords. Longclaw is a very standard type X sword, Ice follows standard geometry as well, though perhaps wider than normal as described in the books, and while Needle is unique in size, there is nothing fantastical about it. It isn’t sized for a 12 year old girl though of course, because in the books Arya isn’t that old. What is fantastical about them? An animal head pommel can be found on swords in museums. Writing on a crossguard can be found on swords in museums (and on swords from LOTR). The white leather (which was GRRM’s idea) on Ice I have never seen elsewhere, but I think that merely makes it unique, not unrealistic. Granted, overall, our Ice is fancier than the show Ice, but the Starks are far wealthier, descendants of kings who ruled half a continent for over a thousand years, in the books than on the show. We, with GRRM, decided to make it like a king’s ceremonial sword – because that is exactly what it is. As for price, remember United Cutlery went bankrupt, also remember gas was less then $2 a gallon when those swords were done, the dollar is a lot weaker now and it buys less. Also, none of those swords came with JRR Tolkien’s autograph
The main thing “unrealistic” about the swords is the complete un-functionality of stainless steel in sword form. Correction: Arya 9 at start 10-11 when she becomes an assassin. Nevertheless, Needle’s crossguard is wider than Ice’s. Just in my humble opinion, I think Ice’s crossguard is much too short for such a large sword. Given the line that Jorah Mormont’s line about why long-swords are more effective at piercing plate armor. Although there are quite a few examples of swords with Ice’s massiveness and shorter cross-guards, the majority have longer cross-guards. Of course it is always personal opinion and who am I to just criticize the Author’s designs, yet I think Ice’s cross-guard is much too small for the size of the sword and the writing is much to big on the short cross-guard. I do love the Stark Embellishment in the middle of the two-handed grip though and the pommel is one of my favorite styles. With Longclaw, there is nothing particularly wrong with it, I always felt the pointed edges (similar to the Ringwraith LOTR swords, hence why I do not own those) are very “fantasy.” There are a few museum examples of those styles. As with a few other people in this thread, I find the wolf’s head to look a bit large on the end of the pommel. But since the blade is so wide it is necessary. At the same time HBO was lazy and didn’t make Longclaw triple fullered like Mr. Martin describes.
On the topic of United Cutlery, although they went bankrupt, they were bought by BUDK and still all of their stainless wall-hangers are under $200, right now May 2012, directly from the manufacturer. As for autographs, I personally think the magic in autographs is walking up to the person and meeting with them while getting it, so I am 100% willing to lower the cost of the sword not to have Mr. Martin’s signature. I personally would rather meet the man and thank him for such amazing writing.
Lastly, I’ll say it again, I really enjoy the book designs of the swords and the plaque art is way better than most of the Windlass Steelcrafts licensed ones. When I read the books, I just saw Needle as more of a fencing sword (similar to HBO’s interpretation), and Ice was somewhere in between HBO’s and your interpretation (I do indeed love the white leather wrap). Just for me, and I know many others, with the Hobbit coming out and all that merchandise along with all these Super Hero films ect. This year is the year of collecting for the Uber Nerds. For me, I can only and only want to spend my limited funds on not only great looking licensed prop replicas but functional ones. High Carbon Steel for the non-Valyrian steel swords and there are quite a few chemical agents that the damascus steel could bathe in to darken them. Beyond that: full tangs (or very close to it), the hilts and pommels need to be steel as well to support functionality. Now, I know this company is smaller and more customer care oriented than say Windlass Steelcrafts. So I am not expecting functional swords for under $230 like Windlass makes, but I would be willing to pay more for a functional sword.
Anyways, what am I saying all this for, your company sells United LOTR swords as well. Heck if you need any apprentices, I would love to be the one folding my own damascus steel Longclaw!
Ice isn’t a Longsword. If you’re comparing it to say, a Claidhmore or a Scottish Lowlander, something that was used more like a pike than a sword, it isn’t accurate. Nor is it a thrusting sword like Needle. It is a ceremonial slashing sword meant for more or less one activity. And Ice has a larger crossguard than Needle, though they’re close in size.
Doing some in stainless or not, you can’t please everyone. When we make a high carbon sword we get complaints about rusting, when we make a stainless sword we get complaints about authenticity. We try to do some both ways.
Longclaw may have a large pommel, but it also has near perfect balance, these two are not unrelated, as you might have realized. Big swords need big pommels if they are to balance, the purpose of a pommel is not just to be pretty, it serves a function. So yes, with the very wide blade, it was needed.
What you might not get, which was my point about UC, there are significant upfront costs in sword manufacturing, all of which UC paid over a decade ago, then they went bankrupt, BUDK bought them, and benefited from the completed work done before. And really, the MSRP on all UC weapons are way above ours, it is just that theirs are sold by more retailers in higher volume that results in more price competition. Way back in the day some people sold UC swords at $5 over wholesale. These people are out of business now, and UC cleaned house of many of their retailers, but that is a big difference.
The other thing is just cost, too. Book Longclaw is very large and was made in 2008. Show Longclaw is significantly smaller, simpler, and will be made in 2012. Costs are around 20% higher for the smaller sword made in 2012 than the bigger sword made in 2008. We’re going to try to not pass that cost on to the customer, but that is the reality of inflation and a weak dollar. So it really isn’t fair to compare swords made a decade apart.
But pricing is a rather moot topic anyway, considering Longclaw and Ice are both almost sold out, so from our standpoint, they’ve been very successful.
You will, however, like some of the HBO props we are making. We’re going to continue trying to please everyone by making some one way, some another. There are full tang high carbon steel swords coming.
If Mr. Martin deemed Ice as a ceremonial sword then you guys nailed it. Just from my readings as well as many other Wiki folks recalled that Ice was described as a great sword used in both executions and battle, including Robert’s Rebellion. Looking at actual swords throughout history, ceremonial swords were big, bulky, and very decorated, yes usually for beheading. By all means, if Mr. Martin said this was Ice’s purpose then perfect! I just envisioned it closer to the HBO design: Large, two-handed sword similar to Oakeshott’s Type XXII. A truly devastating weapon both in battle and in justice serving. The actual swinging of swords (unfortunate for Hollywood’s accuracy) severely slowed down with the introduction to two-handed swords. The swinging around a sword as massive as an executioners axe would greatly tire any hero and the fact that slashing is 84% less effective against plate armor, stabbing was the preferred way to kill for an actual chivalrous knight. The slashing was very effective against pikes and shields though.
Of course on materials, I absolutely think there needs to be both types. There are always the lazy people who don’t have a true love for the art and science of swords and metallurgy that don’t do the every couple weeks dust and RenWax your swords. For me it is just respecting the quality artwork I own. There is also, the Unknowing Nerds, like I used to be, who don’t know the difference between a stainless steel wall hanger, a functional Damascus blade still sitting in an un-functional hilt, and a fully functional sword. This is why we see people on TV and youtube getting shards of stainless steel stuck in their limbs.
On Longclaw, which is perfectly balanced, the Damascus or stainless version? Stainless is quite a bit heavier than high carbon/Damascus, so yes, the large pommel would be indeed needed for the heavier blade. I know that some of my stainless LOTR swords are twice as heavy as my high carbon Windlass functionals.
Expense is always an issue for any company. The newer Windlass swords are starting out at $365 and then get discounted where they used to start sub $300. I completely understand and am willing to pay more, as should any collector who truly appreciates this art. Trust me, the US dollar has depreciated 98% of its original value in 1913. We can thank the Federal Reserve for that!
And for your almost sell-outs… congratulations! I like to see smaller companies do well. I like to support them and I still search quite often for your Damascus blades. I think my main point about this whole mess was that if there is a high carbon, full tanger out there, I will buy it, and I will pay more! I am still hunting for the coveted Museum Glamdring from UC and with your last post stating we shall definitely see some function props, the “Song of Fire and Ice Sword Fund” has officially been started!
hi , is there any news about the new items ?
Will the new HBO versions of the swords be coming with a GRRM autograph also?
No news Damon, and no they will not Bryan. GRRM is all signatured out, and his signature will continue to be something that differentiates the book replicas from the show replicas. Being as the book replicas he designs/approves whereas he doesn’t have full control over what HBO prop designers produce for the show.
i do like the design of your swords but would prefer the longclaw from the HBO tv series is it going to be released and if so when ?
We hope to have the HBO version out late this year.
What about the HBO Jaime Lannister sword?
Any plans on making an HBO replica of the sword Roose Bolton Carries in episode 8 of season 2? The handle is pretty remarkable looking, being that of a flayed man and given his probable increased exposure in season 3 are there any plans to have it created?
No Michael, probably not. Ryan, I’ll admit it is attractive, and we may make it one day if that continues to be the prop he uses later in the series.
I truly can’t wait to buy your Bran assassination dagger, since i’ve seen it in the show. it looks awesome!!!
you said it won’t be full tang, right? i hope it won’t just be rat-tail tang, but something more solid and functional!
any idea when you will start selling it and how much it would cost ?
It’ll be close to $300, its damascus with gold accents, so a little pricier even though it is a dagger.
well you be makeing replicas of the king guard armor that would be great…
i love the way the king guard armor looks like.
Will the dagger come with some sort of stand or display case?
Wall plaque to hold it horizontally.
Sweet, thanks. Will we see concept art or possibly actual photo for the dagger anytime soon?
unless it will be identical in every way to the tv version is what i mean
I just wanted to say that I’m thrilled to hear of the HBO replicas. I really wanted to purchase a Longclaw, but was forced to cancel my order due to the fact that as a new grad it simply was not a feasible purchase. Knowing that the HBO Longclaw will be coming makes me feel much better. Bran’s Assassination Dagger would be a great piece of work as well, I’m looking forward to seeing it.
Thanks Valyrian Steel. I’m excited to follow your work.
hey I’ve been curious for a while about this but what the difference between Damascus steel and other steel?
Will scabbards be made as well?
For some yes.
Jonathan, try this link:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pattern_welding
Are there plans to make Joffery’s sword Hearteater as described in the book?
As described in that article, patterned steel has the beautiful look that Martin based the look of Valryian Steel in the books. More importantly pattern steel/ Damascus when forged correctly with The right hilt and tang in general will make a sword functional. Where stainless steel, although great because it takes a lot to rust, is extremely brittle and will shatter where a real sword will bend and then “spring” back. Of course for functionally collectors have to put more effort in cleaning the swords because the higher carbon content makes them more vulnerable to rust. But I think it is a fair trade to have the satisfaction of owning something that isn’t just a Wall hanger, something that could actually defend you in battle, something you love and take care of. I love waxing my high carbon blades, makes me appreciate what I have and feel one with the blades. Plus it is fun as heck to cut through plastic water bottles, no melons for me be careful the juice will way through your swords!
Sucks BIG time that the Longclaw sword is sold out, will more be made or is it the final word on “no more longclaw”
The book Longclaw is pretty much permanently gone Kruger. Look for the HBO one this Winter.
The HBO Ice, will that be full tang, high carbon steel, and of reasonable thickness and sturdiness?
Also, I know it won’t come with a GRRM signed certificate of authenticity, but what will it come with? Some sort of plaque?
@Danny, it probably will come with a plaque and HBO CoA. Or at least that is how windlass did the Tudor’s Sword.
you guys should make robert’s helmet i would pay any price
Any info on the pricing regarding Robb’s sword and Ice? Will they be stainless steel?
^Also, I can’t quite tell from the photos, what are the dimensions of Robb’s sword?
do you have some release dates?
I’m definitely interested in Robb’s sword as well. Would love to know some more details on it such as pricing and possible available date.
What sort of steel will the HBO Replicas be made out of, and will the hounds be similar to the one on the show?
Will the hounds helmet be similar to the one in the show?
The helm will be fairly identical, we had the actual prop for a little while (as with all the replicas) to make sure it matches. The swords will use a variety of metals, some will be high carbon, still some be stainless.
@ Christian: I saw a Museum Collection Glamdring on ebay a few weeks ago. It was a low number too… #6. I own #271 and would have traded for the lower number but I’m happy with mine and didn’t want to risk trading and winding up with one that doesn’t look as good as mine just to get the lower number. I used to have most of the LOTR UC series but sold all of them except my MC Sting and MC Glamdring. I read some folks have had issues with their MC Glamdrings being slightly curved or bent but mine is flawless. As I’m sure you know, if you keep searching eBay, sometimes one will surface.
Now back to the topic at hand… So happy with my Stainless Longclaw and glad I was able to get one well before they sold out. The price has nearly tripled on eBay and other sites. I would have loved to pick up a Damascus Longclaw but I was too late unfortunately. Will most certainly be on the look out for the Damascus show Longclaw! As for the others, they are all so cool and unique in their own way. Assassin’s dagger sounds pretty sweet as does show Ice… Jaime’s sword would be nice as would Daario’s girls. So much to look forward to!
Keep up the great work Valyrian! You guys rock!!!
Will the Hounds helm have a functioning visor like the one in the show where he opened the jaw of the hound shaped helm?
Yes, we insisted on making it articulating. The prototype (which I cannot yet show you pictures of, but it exists), has the feature and it works fine.
Will you have the photos of the helmet out by the end of August?
very likely yes
any news?
Will King Stannis’ sword, Lightbringer, be available? I know it was talked about extensively in the books, though I can imagine its colouration could be difficult to do
@Mike B
I have been talking with many people on the ucforums.com as well as Kit Rae about how they made the Museum Glamdring. The runes on the Museum Glamdring’s hilt are actually not movie accurate. They were switched and printed the wrong direction. Also, he spoke about how fragile it is and the high carbon steel blade had a low rating (making it fragile) mixed with the tang not being fully secured into the pommel. So his rec for everyone was never to hit the MC Glamdring against anything because it has high chances of breaking like rat-tail tang “wall hangers.”
@Damon No news to report. We’re working, but there is nothing we can release yet.
will you be making Gendry’s awesome helmet….the bull helm. If not you should really think about it, it is an amazing helmet.
My birthday is July 27th and I was hoping you’d have some news or (even better) pictures of upcoming items? That would be a great gift.
How much will HBO’s Ice will cost? I want it full tang, carbon steel. What about the scabbard? Will it be some “wolf” skin?
Apologies if this has already been covered but will the HBO replicas be made in limited numbers like the book versions?
some will, some won’t.
We don’t have prices on HBO Ice yet, but we intend to make it full tang and high carbon.
Is there a release date yet?
War hammer shipping update?
Are you going to make Robb stark sword and when is it caming out
We’re working on both Robb’s sword and warhammer shipping right now.
I have a few questions
1 What will the HBO Longclaw be made from and is it going to be more then the book variant. (also are you’re swords battle ready?)
2 When is the Stark shield coming out and what will it be made from.
3 Are you planing on making scabbards for any of the swords?
4 and lastly will you be making anymore of Longclaw and Ice from the books?
1. Slightly more expensive, Longclaw, because of the highly decorative pommel, cannot be full tang. It will come in stainless or damascus steel.
2. Steel, we hope sometime this fall.
3. Yes.
4. No.
Oh and will the HBO Longclaw be able to be swung or is it going to be decorative only?
Also will Longclaw now come with a scabbard?
And were would i buy one of the cloaks from the show?
This is probably further down the line, but have you put any thought into suits of armor? There could be some awesome sets (especially as described in the books) like Renly’s green plate and stag helm, Bolton and Lannister armor (Joeffrey’s plate from the show is REALLY COOL) or Kingsguard armor (show or book). Looking forward to the Hound’s Helm!
The HBO Longclaw is not full tang but could it still be swung? And will a scabbard cost extra?
Ok, so if I got an email with an expected delivery date of 8/2, that should be disregarded then?
will you make robert’s warhammer from the show? i always thought it would be a one handed hammer
@William
For a sword to be fully functional it NEEDS a FULL tang. Anything less then the blade is NOT fully stable inside a hilt. So yes, you may be able to “swing” it but certainly not cut anything. Honestly, that one video they posted of that girl chopping with one of the book swords was one of the most stupid things I have seen someone do. At anytime the blade could have snapped (because of rat-tail or half tang construction) and doubled back to stab her. Honestly, there is absolutely no reason to buy a high carbon steel damascus blade if it is wasted on a rat tail or half tang hilt. This saddens me greatly, that Valyrian states “Slightly more expensive, Longclaw, because of the highly decorative pommel, cannot be full tang.” Because it is definitely not a fact that they “cannot” be full tang, is that they will not do it. Plenty of other licensed products have been made fully functional with high carbon full tang blades for under $400. I can’t see any reason why Valyrian’s producers “cannot” do it unless they simply lack the skill of producing real weapons.
A full tang is a sword where a tang extends through the top of the pommel and then is either peened flat (like a rivet) or secured with a nut of some sort.
How would you hammer flat a tang extending from the top of the wolf’s head without damaging the wolf head itself? How would you apply a nut so that it wasn’t visible?
A full tang requires the tang to be visible outside of the pommel, so you can’t do it with such a decorative pommel.
Do you think a full tang is just merely a tang that extends all the way to the pommel and is terminated inside of the pommel? That isn’t the correct definition, it has to extend out the back of the pommel. If you think it should merely extend to the pommel to be considered full tang then you should be happy, because our Longclaw is such.
Some people think a rat tail tang means approximately one inch past the cross guard there is a weld, and some really cheap swords (usually knockoffs) are built that way. Sometimes the tang only makes it halfway down the grip, and then is welded. Ours makes it to the pommel itself.
Our next Longclaw based on the show is based on the prop, and the prop isn’t full tang, because it can’t be, because of the decorative wolf head, so the replica will not be full tang either. The Ice prop is full tang, so the replica will be, and Robb’s sword is full tang, so the replica will be. On both if you look in screenshots you can see the nut at the end of the pommel securing the tang. You won’t see a nut on Longclaw.
I won’t claim we know everything about sword construction, so by all means if you know a way to have a tang invisibly erupt from the top of a decorative wolf head without damaging it or being visible, we’re all ears.
Also, in 2600 total pcs, only 1 Longclaw has ever been reported broken, and it had its pommel smashed laterally against a granite countertop.

Like telling Hattori Hanzo he doesn’t know how to make a blade. The only thing I know about tang is the kind you drink, but even I know ownage when I see it.
The definition that I use is the same that Albion Swords uses, which of course they make both historical and historically inspired swords, very nice indeed: Full tang — A sword tang that passes the entire length of the grip, and is attached directly to the sword’s pommel.
We mostly see this type of “full tang” historically because it was the easiest way to solidify the blades position in the hilt. Longclaw, would easily be made the same way. Many swords with decorative hilts would have first been made by a blacksmith as a basic sword. Then they would send the sword to a leather and woodworker for the handle, and many times the last worker to work on a sword would be a jeweler that would bling it out. (Of course some blacksmiths were very handy and could do all three!) So Longclaw, historically would have first been made to a basic sword, where the bear head (later wolf head) would be added later. We all don’t need to know much about swords to think that stone/clay/whatever the head is supposed to be carved from would be a terrible material to secure a longsword blade.
Good little reference: http://www.bladeseller.com/Construction/index.htm
I believe what you are referring to, the whole tang being able to be “seen” out the end of the pommel is an “extended tang” or a “peeled full tang.” Those both would show the end of the tang out the end of the pommel. It must be a difference in definition, because all my swords that are “full tang,” I believe only 2 of them are actually peeled full tangs, the rest are by Albion and Windlass’ definition of full tang: extended the full length of the handle.
The point I was trying to make was not to insult you or your company but the original comment of “Damascus but not full tang” immediately disappointed me because we clearly do not have the same definition of “full tang.” That is why I made it a point to comment at the end that I KNOW your producers are perfectly capable of producing high quality products.
I am extremely excited and re-ignited to know that your Longclaw will indeed be the market’s definition of “full tang” and that if we choose to purchase the Damascus, High Carbon Steel blade, we will have a perfectly “safe” functional sword.
The comment about the video is honestly meant to inform uneducated collectors that their pieces really shouldn’t be used to cut, especially down to a hard surface like the video. Besides the tang construction, stainless steel is much more brittle than high carbon so it can shattered and shard much easier. I have seen people think their $2000 Marto swords are “real” and they end up breaking them. So, again, I am not calling out your products as unsafe or cheap because they certainly are not cheaply made. Just the original versions (particularly stainless) should NEVER be used in the fashion that video had demonstrated. All it takes is someone to live in a humid climate and just a couple nano meter cracks to form in the blade for it to snap when striking something hard. This goes the same for $300-$500 stainless kitchen knives that all the “celebrity” chefs use. Even those with “shorter” blades can snap, but it is exponentially less likely with a blade under 14 inches.

i agree with christian, you first make it a real sword then add the pommel afterwords, for further references look at united cutlery’s glamdring whoever says it cant be done i call B.S.
Do you have an ETA on some pics of the hounds helm yet?
The credit Card is waiting the hammering from buying it and having UK customs and excise literally hammering me with an additional 20% on top of the price I pay you guys, then some amount of between 5 and a whopping 85% of the item value added to that ….
Do you have any pics for the hounds helm yet? Also how many will you expect to make, and is it still $300 as earlier estimated?
twats twats twats twats twats twats twats twats twats im waiting to see the pict ure of the sword
Hey, not sure if it’s been addressed yet but any time frame for the HBO sword replica’s release date?
Hi Valyrian Steel, on behalf of the fans desperate to buy the next piece, do you have an update for us on any of the upcoming items? Specifically, what can we look forward to being up for purchase this fall?
As always, winter is coming, and I am ecstatic to add to my collection of great Valyrian Steel.
Faithfully,
Claudio
I second everything that my fellow collector Claudio said up above. I check every day to see new updates, and you guys gotta give us something, a pic, a timeframe, something. Your devoted customers are demanding it.
We can’t, and I mean can’t, not won’t, or don’t want to. We’re contractually limited on what we can say. I can say that we hope to have preorders open this fall, but it is unlikely any product will be in your hands until 2013 (first quarter probably). We can’t show you pictures though because no pictures have been approved for release yet, sorry.
Kingsguard Armor. Top priority in my
How do you order as I would like a gold cloaked helmet?
I’d love Jaime’s Sword and Dagger Set he uses when fighting Eddard Stark in King’s Landing.
Lot of us would buy a Longclaw sword from the books if you produce another edition. Perhaps another 2500 of us would buy the sword. Why don´t you still make another edition, is it becasue it´s to much work and you don´t have time or because you don´t want to make George RR Matin sign other 2500 swords?
And second, would be your Lonclaw sword like the one from HBO have the same sice as in the series ?
And how much would we have to pay for it?
Thank you so much .
The book version is permanently retired because it was a limited edition. It would not be fair to existing customers if we told them it was going to be a limited collectible, and then to just make more of them. The new version of it will be based on the HBO show and look just like the prop.
When will you guys release (sorry if im spelling it wrong)the first pictures of the replicas?
Is there any chance you could tell us the order in which you will release all these brilliant products discussed here? (for budgeting purpose mostly) I don’t suppose you have any dates yet for either pictures or pre-orders. Thanks a lot!
Will you guys be doing the dragonbone hilt dagger from Bran’s assassin? You know this one http://winter-is-coming.net/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/mgot-dagger.jpg
We are already working on that dagger.
Does anyone else check this daily? I’m dieing to hear some news on the up coming products! could we at least get a list of project being worked on or a time line for pre order…please. Thanks. Ps just got my “The Lands of Ice and Fire” today and recommend that everyone else should!
Darcy, I also check every day but it looks like VS cannot tell us anything. I’m dying to see Oathkeeper and have been saving up because it has to be Damascus steel and so far my budget only stretched to the Stainless Steel swords. I’m really hoping we’ll hear something before Christmas though…
The Facebook page has alot of info on it and VS frequently answers (and re-answers!) questions on products.
We’ve been working on concept art on Oathkeeper with GRRM for over a year. Once concept art is approved we’ll announce it and it’ll take a year from then, generally, to get a sword in your hands. So it will not be any time soon. On HBO stuff we’re still plugging away at it.
Awsome, thanks for the info! Roose, thanks for the tip but I choose not to use FB because it has changed so much from what it was originaly. Can’t wait for Oathkeeper, because I love my ICE so much. I will deffinatly pick up The Assasination Dagger when it comes, it just cant come soon enough.
So the Ice and Longclaws that are on the site now as sold out are based on the books and are collectibles correct?
But you will be making these swords again based on the show props? Sorry, I just found this site so trying to catch up!
Will the prices of the swords based on the show be priced the same as the collectibles, and will you be producing more than just a limited number of them?
Was dissappointed to find out the swords I wanted on the site were sold out, but happy to see that it sounds like swords will be made again based on the show!
Also, excited since I saw you plan on Kingsguard armor! Question, is there anyway you would consider making the whole suit even as individual items (maybe in like a 3 part set) because the scale of the shoulder pauldron armor piece is what the armor is known for and I’m betting most people wouldn’t mind having to space apart getting the whole set. Especially because there are so many famous knights of the KG to use quotes from!
Are there any plans to produce the sword Ned uses in the t.v show
Yes Ben, in fact, I saw photos of the first prototype today.
are you going to make lightbringer?
Its great that you guys are doing the swords for Ice and Longclaw. I so want to get Longclaw any update on a release or when we could be expecting it.
Also in terms of what the book version of Longclaw and the HBO prop version any major differences? Is the Wolf Head going to be different.
Great that you releasing Ice and Longclaw back to the public though different from the book version.. Are there any differences specifically notcieable differences between the book/HBO version of Longclaw.
And also when can we be expecting Longclaw HBO version to be released?
Hello!
This is awesome to hear.
Will you be making the cloaks of House Stark? (the onces with fur at the shoulders)
Cheers from Denmark!
No our license does not include clothing.
HBO Longclaw and Ice will be released fairly soon.
Hi there!
Wondering when and where these items will be released? Would kill (figuratively) for a Stark Infantry Shield on my wall at home!
Love from Sweden
Stark Infantry Shield should open up soon.
Also if possible, you should definitely continue to use book quotes for the certificate of authenticity.
I would litterally cut myself an arm and a leg to have a replica of Tywin’s armour .
Preferably a functional replica , not just a decoration armour .
The armour simply looks gorgeous .
What you already did is amazing , keep up like this Valyrian Steel , i’m in love with what you do !
Cheers from Belgium
I’m sure there is a large crowd who would want a Renly Baratheon crown, including me. So you should probably get on that.
Hey guys, look what I have found here http://allegro.pl/szklanica-lannisterow-i3095377685.html?source=oo
Can You make those ?
It would be a dream to be able to own the Dothraki weapons such as the
Arakh, any of them in production?
Would it be possible or you to make a Dothraki arakh because alot of people would probably want to get their hands on it (including me ).
any chance of seeing a replica of ned starks executioners sword?
Already up for preorder John, check out Ice, Sword of Eddard Stark on our site.
Any chance of ned starks longsword (not ice, the one he had with him in the tv series while in Kings Landing) being produced?
we don’t plan on it jeremy
I know you’ve stated you don’t know how, but you should really make figuring out Dawn a priority if it appears in the books. It hasn’t even appeared yet and already is known to exemplify everything good and chivalrous from Westeros and of all book pieces seems to be one of the most demanded. Please don’t give up on this one if it shows up.
When can we expect the HBO Longclaw to be available?
Preorders should open later this summer.
Will the HBO replica’s be a limited release like the book replica’s? Meaning, will production be halted after a specific number as they were in the past?
will you be making a replica of the Unsullied helmet in the near future? Because they are one of the coolest things in the season so far
We plan on it Rohan.
Any idea on when we can expct it?
Will the hbo version of longclaw have a scabbard that you can buy for it?
Will you be making replicas of the Kingshguard armor along with the lannister and Joffrey armor from the battle of blackwater? Especially a functional suit. They are incredibly epic and it would be smashing to have one. I hope to hear from you. Cheers.
We plan to do at least some pieces of Kingsguard armor.
Thats excellent news for your company! i am without a doubt buying the HBO longclaw replica, its the first sword i ever looked at and thought “… it must be mine!” even if i have to sell my house haha!
I have some questions about Longclaw.
When will it be out for pre order?
Is it going to come with a scabbard or plaque, and will it be stainless or Damascus steel.
Will the scabbard come with the dagger or not?
And lastly how much is all this stuff going to cost..
Still waiting to hear if hbo replica’s will be a limited release, would be good to know what i’m paying for when i pay for it.
Some are, some aren’t, it says on the product page if it is or isn’t.
How can I purchase one?
Will you guys ever make renly baratheon stagg crown like in the show? I am just so in love with it ahh i hope its not just me. Please please please make renly’s crown!!!
So will there be an HBO Version of Needle this year?
Not this year no Sam. Jake mai, our license doesn’t include crowns.
are there any updates on when we can expect HBO Longclaw?
Very very soon Brian.
Thanks for the update been anxiously checking the site daily haha
Are you guys gonna make a kingsguard armor set I bet you money it sells out FAST also what about oberyn spear???
Just bought Robb’s sword #357 and the Catspaw Dagger #343. LOVE them both, especially Robb’s sword. First of all I’d like to say you guys are really cool to spend so much time on this site answering fan comments/questions. Can you give me a hint as to the timeframe for Robb’s scabbard?
Could you make a replica of Robert Baratheon’s Crown??? Like the crown that is on the official poster of GoT Season 2??? And also the kingsguard suit and helm. Thanks
When can I buy a replica of Jaime Lannister’s sword or Hearteater?
Hey just curious if you had any idea of when we might be seeing the HO version of needle…it was my favorite sword in the show compared to its book version.
You might see it in 2014 Edward Ball, but you likely won’t hold it until 2015.
Could you please make the armor of Jaime Lannistar ? I would certainly buy it !
I agree with some others, crowns would be fantastic! Robert and Renly’s both look good.
Any plan on kingsguard armor or jaime lannister sword ?
we plan on both John
Oh god you made my day thanks you so much !
Is there any chance of producing one of Sandor Clegane’s swords?
I would like a replica of Kingsguard armor! Would that be possible!? I would love to see this :3.
Will there be a version of King Stannis’ sword, Lightbringer ???
Is there a possibility for Raehgar’s armor? if so whats a preliminary range that woul
Is there a possibility for Raehgar’s armor? if so whats a preliminary range that would cost?
How soon could we expect Oberyn’s spear?
How soon, do you estimate, you will have arakhs for sale?
Are there any plans for the HBO Needle?
Are there any plans to make suits of Kingsguard armor?
Yes, we plan to make the kingsguard armor. We also plan to do HBO’s Needle, and arakhs should be up for preorder by the end of the year. (needle too)
When can we expect pre order for kings guard armor?
Hello Valyrian Steel !
Amazing swords, I love longclaw and robb’s sword…I was wondering, would it be possible to make Bronn’s sword?
Best Always
Ser Finn of the Blackforest,of House Creaney, First of His Name and Ranger of the North.
Hey guys !!
I’m looking everywhere for Kingsguard and Lannister armor and I was just wondering if you guys were still in the process of creating any, because if so I’d love to get my hand on some, it’s the most incredible armor on the show.
Thankyou
Hi valyrian steel,
I’ve bought the jaime lannister sword recently and found it to be rather loose and rattling, I’d like to know if the tang is threaded to the pommel so that I can tighten it or is there ways to fix it?
Thanks,
YP
Yes, the tang is threaded to a tubular nut, around which the pommel is glued (the pommel is essentially a decorative nutcap). One thing you can try is injecting epoxy into the grip from the top (through the crossguard) with a syringe.
Once the Maester’s chain becomes possible, if ever, I’ll be buying that so quickly that heads will spin.
Hello Valyrian Steel Team
First, you make great Prducts !!;)
but I had a short Question to you.
Why do you don’t make the Sword ot Stannis Baratheon?
Would this item never can be buy for fans and Customers? Or do you produce these after the Show is end?
Regards Phoenix
I haven’t bought any of ur products but they look great is there any chance you people at valerian steel make gendry baratheons hammer??? Or his old bull helm
I know it just appeared on the show but gendry’s hammer? Will this ever be in the works?
